ABOUT ME

Hey! I am Dominic Shipp, a 2023 Graduate from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor's degree in Sport Management and Marketing. During my time at Michigan I was involved in the University of Michigan Collegiate National Powerlifting Team, the University of Michigan Sport Business Association, the Michigan Sport Business Inclusion Community, and the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. When it's all said and done, I strive to use the power of brands to empower individuals and ultimately push culture forward.

At 15, I faced my first marketing challenge; getting sponsored for skateboarding. I used social media to build my personal brand and earned sponsorship from several local and national brands. A lot has changed since then, but I took note of the impact those brands had on myself and my community.

I went on to study Digital Marketing at DePaul University from 2018-2020, moving to Chicago gave me an all-access pass to culture and subcultures - I found myself at the intersection of skating, fashion, music, and sport. From there, I worked in social media for Haven Design Haus and Applied Fitness Solutions, developing an understanding of content strategy through these small businesses. That summer, I interned with a startup incubator and consulted a sports technology firm, where I worked with a partner to create their digital brand from the ground up.

Fast-forward to the Summer of 2022, I interned with Digital River's Product Marketing Team - where I led the Go-to-Market Strategy for their Amazon Pay Express Checkout Solution. At the same time, I worked with the University of Michigan's Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion to program, promote, and execute over 15 events for the campus community; I was offered an extension to continue my work as I finish my degree and continued to support the office as a Marketing and Media Assistant. As a transfer student and POC, a strong sense of belonging was not immediately felt. I took it upon myself to foster environments that celebrate diverse identities and assure others that they belong: through my work with the DEI office.

As a 2023 MAIP fellow, I worked with Highdive in Chicago on the Jersey Mike's Account, the team produced 4 new TV spots that begin airing on 8/26. I also assisted the CSO and Strategy team with New Business pitches, one of which we won! I got into Advertising through skateboarding and my professional experiences have cultivated my ability to creatively problem-solve in Account and Strategy positions.

I am a creative and strategic thinker that can work independently and as a team player. As a fervent learner, I adapt quickly, communicate effectively, and embrace diverse perspectives while providing my POV.

Account Management Intern

Led weekly Internal Status meetings, orchestrated alignment across Creative, Account, Legal, Business Affairs, and Production teams by producing weekly Hot-List and Internal Status documents

• Researched, presented, and discussed a competitive audit of the QSR category with Jersey Mike’s Creative team

• Wrote and presented Creative Brief for a Super Bowl pitch, moved through the iterative creative process throughout the summer, presented final pitch to clients, and garnered high praise for exceptional quality

Jersey Mike's Competitive Audit Highdive

During my time at Highdive, I delved into researching, writing, and presenting a brief to Account and Creative teams on the Jersey Mike's account. The main goal was to get everyone up to speed on the latest happenings within the QSR category and the evolving cultural landscape in Q3 of 2023. I led an hour-long presentation and ensuing discussion. The beauty? It was a true collaboration, with the team chiming in, sharing their insights, and championing my point of view.

Modern Masculinity Highdive

 

At Highdive, I had the pleasure of working on a New Business pitch for a Super Bowl spot in the Sports Betting category. The brand needed help finding their identity in a sea of sameness. I took this opportunity to do a deep-dive (no pun intended) on modern masculinity and pay homage to an absolute icon. Peep the insight using the link below.

Valiant Management Group Strategy Capstone Project 

For the Sport Management Capstone class: ‘Strategy of Sport Organizations,’ I was assigned to a group of three; we were tasked with creating a comprehensive strategy for the University of Michigan Women’s Gymnastics team and individual athletes to leverage NIL opportunities. My group was one of three projects selected from my class to present in front of Valiant Management Group, where we had 20 minutes to pitch our recommendations to Founder & CEO Jared Wangler.

Michigan Baseball NIL Strategy Proposal

In my Business Communications class, I collaborated with three group members to write a 56-page report on NIL opportunities for the Michigan Baseball Team. This report included the following: APA formatted Title Page, Letter of Transmittal, Table of Contents, List of Illustrations, Executive Summary, Introduction: Problem, Purpose, Scope, and background, Discussion/Body, Conclusion, Recommendations, APA Reference Page, and Appendixes. My group also prepared and presented a 20-minute pitch that provided an overview of our recommendations. We received the highest project grade in our class.

Umichdiversity Content Strategy

Here is the slide deck I pitched to the Head of Communications providing content strategy recommendations for the launch of the @umichdiversity Instagram account. I performed a Social Media audit of other Universities' DEI office Instagram accounts and used that to inform several content recommendations. Marketing materials I created for the 2022 DEI Summit are also attached.
